Did you know that “The Hill District” isn’t actually a City of Pittsburgh neighborhood? It’s five! Visit four of them (Middle Hill, Terrace Village, Crawford Roberts, and Bedford Dwellings) with Urban Hike to learn about some of the past and future of this storied “district.”
We are excited to offer this hike as part of Jane’s Walk, an international movement very much aligned with Urban Hike. On the first weekend in May, hundreds of citizen-led walking tours will take place around the world inspired by Jane Jacobs, a community activist who promoted walkable communities (and opposed urban renewal projects, including the one that removed blocks of houses and businesses in order to build the Civic Arena). For more info, visit http://www.janeswalk.org/
We’ll meet Saturday, May 2 at 10:30 a.m. in the community room of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh’s Hill District branch. There should be plenty of street parking available in the immediate vicinity, as well as a small lot behind the Library.
The hike is about 4 miles long. As the neighborhood’s name suggests, there are plenty of hills and a healthy set of steps — so it’s not the easiest hike for kids in strollers. Or for the adults pushing them. Bring your hiking shoes, water, and whatever the day’s weather requires – we hike rain or shine! The hike will last around 2.5 hours.
We look forward to seeing you on May 2nd!
